Our Burial Policy

Koolauhuiia Protestant Church is a historic place of worship and remembrance. Portions of the church grounds include historic and culturally significant burial areas that are protected under Hawaiʻi law. Visitors are asked to mālama i ka ʻāina and treat the grounds with care and respect.

BURIAL & MEMORIAL PRACTICES POLICY

Koolauhuiia Protestant Church is committed to honoring those who came before us while caring for this sacred place in accordance with the law.

IN-GROUND BURIALS

At this time, Koolauhuiia Protestant Church is not able to accommodate new in-ground burials or any activity that disturbs the ground. This includes opening graves, placing remains below ground, or excavation of any kind within burial areas. These restrictions exist because Hawaiʻi law requires special governmental review and approvals for ground disturbance in historic burial sites. The church does not currently hold these approvals.

CREMATED REMAINS (ASHES)

Above-ground memorial practices, including the respectful ceremonial spreading of cremated remains, may be permitted on a limited, case-by-case basis, provided that:
• No soil is disturbed;
• The activity is conducted respectfully and in keeping with the sacred nature of the site;
and
• Prior approval is obtained from the church.

Families should contact the church in advance to discuss arrangements.

PROTECTION OF HISTORIC AND NATIVE HAWAIIAN BURIALS

The church is committed to protecting all burials on its property, including Native Hawaiian burials (iwi kūpuna). Preservation in place is the guiding principle. If human remains are inadvertently discovered, all activity must stop immediately and appropriate authorities must be notified as required by law.

FUTURE CHANGES

This policy will remain in effect unless legal requirements change and the church
affirmatively decides to seek and obtain necessary approvals. Any changes will be
communicated publicly.

Q: Are ashes allowed?

A: Yes, ceremonial spreading of ashes without soil disturbance may be permitted.

Q: Is this permanent?

A: The policy remains until laws change or approvals are obtained. To date, the church does
not have the funds to undertake this lengthy and costly process.
